The work INDEX began in 2002 as a collection of motifs. It was also the beginning of the `sphereimages`, which began with rows of round objects on a blue background.
Annette von der Bey collected motifs on square canvases measuring 18 cm x 18 cm and tried them out. She could play with the small formats, put them together in groups
and combine them in new ways. The blue background was considered neutral, based on the blue screen technique in film (now often green screen), which is used wherever the
actual motif is mounted in front of a different background or in a different environment in a subsequent technical process.
When her artwork expanded from round objects to round in general in 2009, INDEX was the appropriate group of work to explore the round in general. The round on the square format remained.
INDEX is von der Bey's playground and sketchbook. Each INDEX picture is preceded by the question: "What will that look like?" It's about certain details, color
combinations, variations or effects.
INDEX is an abridged version of Annette von der Bey's painterly work through the years, her memo and an index.
