I began the work on INDEX (46) in 2002 as a collection of motives. This also marks the beginning of what I call Kugelbilder, starting with round objects on blue
background. I started experimenting with round motives on small square canvases (18cm x 18cm). The small format allowed for an intuitive workflow, to play around
with their order and combinations.
The blue background is neutral to me, not unlike the use of a bluescreen in film.
When my focus shifted from round objects to just round in 2009, INDEX proved to be the ideal series to explore this: a round cutout, a round hole, a round window.
INDEX is my playground and my sketchbook. Pencil sketches aren't my thing. Lines are abstract to me.
Each piece of INDEX is an experiment that poses the question: “How will that look?“ It's about details, colour combinations, variations or effects.
"I have to try this on canvas. Let's see how it turns out."
Each piece reminds me of what I love about painting and what my work used to be. It accompanies me through the years, like a summary of my work, like an index.
